PREP SPORTS: Keppel Dumps Schurr, 9-4

After a 3-1 loss to Schurr High on Tuesday, the Mark Keppel High baseball team bounced back to beat the Spartans, 9-4, on Friday with the help of a nine-run sixth inning in Almont League action.

Pitcher Edmundo Fernandez got the win for the Aztecs with his seventh complete game of the year. Fernandez gave up three earned runs, struck out four, walked four and scattered eight hits en route to the victory.
Keppel coach Ryan Nunez had high praise for the hurler.
“He’s probably the best right-handed pitcher in the (CIF) Southern Section right now,” Nunez said of Fernandez. “He’s in the top three in ERA and he’s probably the best righty in the land.”
Down, 3-0, Keppel looked to the bats of designated hitter Jacob Soto, catcher Nate Torres and shortstop Nick Marquez for inspiration. Soto, who was starting his first game, had two singles and scored two runs, Torres knocked in two RBI and Marquez had one RBI while also scoring a run.
Nunez said he was happy with the way his team came responded from a 3-0 deficit.
“We came right back from it,” he said. “We started a little slow, but our bats showed things in one inning. It was our first biggest inning since Montebello (on April 11) and it was our biggest inning of the year.”
He added the experience and leadership on the team is doing its job and should continue the remainder of the season.
“The seniors are bringing us home,” Nunez said. “They’re coming out there and doing it and we’re looking to them the rest of the year.”
