PREP BASEBALL: Aztecs Down Bell Gardens, 6-4

Make that the second three-game winning streak of the season for the Mark Keppel High baseball team as the Aztecs beat Bell Gardens High, 6-4, on Tuesday at home and 5-3 again on Friday on the road in Almont League games.

Sophomore pitcher Eli Castillo led the way on the mound for the Aztecs, pitching the final 1 2/3 innings of scoreless ball on Tuesday and the last 3 2/3 innings in Friday’s game and picked up the win as he allowed just one run on four hits to go with four walks and a strikeout.
Tuesday’s winning pitcher was Daniel De La Pena. De La Pena allowed four runs – two of them earned – and six hits over five innings while also striking out four and walking one.
Keppel coach Ryan Nunez said he is pleased with the way his team is going about its business.
“We came right back from a loss and have a three-game winning streak. I’m proud of the guys, the way they have bounced back.”
Nunez said he is especially proud of the way Castillo has been pitching, especially since he missed the beginning of the season with a broken finger.
“He’s really fought his way into our pitching rotation,” Nunez said of Castillo. “He has a late start on the season. He’s a tough kid. He’s looking really good. I can pitch him every game on out if I need to.”
And leading the way offensively for Keppel as of late has been third baseman Edmundo Fernandez, Nunez said.
“He’s been smashing the ball,” Nunez said of Fernandez. “He’s been hitting them right at people, but finally on Friday he broke through with an RBI.”
Catcher Nathan Torres had a hot game on Tuesday, going 2-for-3 with two hits, a double, an RBI and a run scored. On Friday, Fernandez and De La Pena led the way with two hits each.
