With CIF Southern Section playoffs just around the corner, the Mark Keppel High baseball team ran into a tough team from Alhambra High and fell on Tuesday, 3-1, and again on Saturday, 13-2, in Almont League play.
The losses mean the Aztecs finish the season in second place with a record of 8-11 overall and a 7-8 league record. They face host San Marino High on Thursday at 3:15 p.m.
Keppel coach Ryan Nunez said teammates Nick Marquez and Nathan Torres were instrumental in the team’s success this season.
“Nick Marquez transferring from Arcadia was huge,” Nunez said. “And Torres stood out for us pitching and catching. He did a lot of good things for us.”
Nunez added the team’s seniors came through when they needed to.
“All seven seniors, they did what we asked them to do,” he said.
Nunez also said the team did what it could given the hand it was dealt.
“We didn’t have much of a staff,” he said. “We didn’t get an assistant coach until the middle of the season, so it was me and the kids basically all the way through.”
The winner of Thursday’s game will advance to meet the winner of a contest pitting Oaks Christian against a wild card team on May 27. Location and time are to be determined.
