class="gkFeaturedItemTitle" Rosemead Coach "CJ" Joe Duran Passes On, Vigil is Jan. 14

  Coach Joe Duran, known as CJ, passed at home on Thursday, Jan. 11, 2018.

   He was a beloved owner and director of Running Rebels of West San Gabriel Valley boys and girls youth basketball program and girls junior varsity basketball coach at Rosemead High School for many years. CJ also coached baseball a few years at Rosemead High School. He worked at Rosemead High School for many years.
   CJ will be remembered by his friends and co-workers for teaching life skills and basketball skills in his own unique way. Many people respect him for helping students learn to do better in school. It was his proudest moment when a student did better in the classroom. He has students in the past and on the current Rosemead High teams who were ineligible or had low grades at one point in the past and became honor roll students because of his tough love and encouragement.

MONTEBELLO – Roman Flores hit a 3-pointer as time expired as the Montebello boys basketball team fought off a gritty squad from Keppel, winning 49-46 at home on Tuesday night in an Almont League game.Flores said he knew he was going to hit the buzzer beater.
“I’m going to make this shot!” he said, describing what was going through his head as he shot the ball.

class="gkFeaturedItemTitle" PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: "Big" Game Dec. 4 at SG Academy

  SAN GABRIEL -- San Gabriel Academy will host Price High School in a varsity boys basketball Harbor League game on Thursday, Jan. 4, 2018, at 7 p.m.  Parking and admission is free and boys junior varsity plays at 5:30 p.m. at San Gabriel Academy, which is located on Broadway just west of Rosemead Boulevard.

Price, 9-5 overall, has won multiple California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section (CIFSS) championships in previous years. San Gabriel Academy, 7-3 overall, features several players who contribute to the success of the team said boys Head Coach Kevin McCloskey. "Sava Dukic is our starting point guard, has a 3.75 grade point average, and is being recruited by some NCAA Division 1 and 2 teams, and we have 6'10" and 6'9" centers." said McCloskey.

ALHAMBRA – Michael Granados scored 25 points, Laird Anderson, Jr. added 20 and the Keppel boys basketball team defeated visiting Bell Gardens 74-47 on Tuesday night in the Almont League opener for both teams. After surrendering the game’s opening basketball, Keppel (10-7, 1-0 AL) scored 11 straight points and led, 16-7, after one period.

ALHAMBRA – The Keppel girls basketball team scored the game’s first nine points and cruised to a 63-22 victory over visiting Bell Gardens on Tuesday night in the Almont League opener for both teams. Jocelyn Song led the Aztecs (13-3, 1-0 AL) with 13 points, while Alyssa Lee scored 12 points and Fanny Tu added 10.

class="gkFeaturedItemTitle" PREP BASKETBALL: San Gabriel Boys, Rosemead Girls Winning

  San Gabriel High School varsity boys basketball team recently won two of three games while Rosemead varsity girls basketball is 5-0 after winning Rosemead Holiday Classic. 

  In boys basketball, San Gabriel won 43 -35 against Woodrow Wilson, won 51-44 against La Mirada, and lost 39-36 to Los Altos. Gabrielino won 62-58 versus Monrovia.

  In girls basketball, Rosemead won its own tourney with a 44-19 win in the title game against Workman.

  In other girls basketball games, Santa Fe defeated Schurr 43-40. Mark Keppel won 55-43 against El Rancho and lost 79-68 to Centennial. Pioneer beat Alhambra 52-48, and Alhambra won 49-38 versus Wilson. San Gabriel defeated Citrus Hill 35-31.

           ONTARIO -- Gabrielino High School girls varsity basketball team lost 57-43 to Rowland High School in the championship game of the Ontario Christian High School Tournament on Dec. 30, 2016, while Rosemead High School defeated Northview 39-22 for third place in the Ontario High School Tournament.

           ROSEMEAD -- Rosemead High School boys varsity basketball team won easily 60-29 against visiting El Monte High School in a Mission Valley League (MVL) game on Dec. 22, 2016, at Rosemead.

  El Monte High School girls varsity basketball team defeated Rosemead 31-29 in a come-from-behind win. Rosemead led 27-20 in the fourth quarter.

class="gkFeaturedItemTitle" Jay Gauthier Sr. Named Head Coach for So. El Monte HS Girls Basketball

            SOUTH EL MONTE – Jay Gauthier Sr., one of the winningest coaches in Mission Valley League sports history, recently was selected as the new head coach of girls basketball at South El Monte High School.

   Gauthier said he enjoys helping local students improve and is eagerly looking forward to building the girls basketball program. He should be approved by the El Monte Union High School District Board at its meeting on Aug. 2, 2017. He said off-campus coaches will be announced soon for the junior varsity team.

class="gkFeaturedItemTitle" PREP BASKETBALL: Keppel Women Cruise to Victory Over Norwalk

NORWALK – The Keppel girls basketball team scored the game’s first 34 points and easily cruised to a 65-14 victory over host Norwalk on Friday night in a semifinal game of the Norwalk Tournament at Norwalk High School.
The Aztecs led 24-0 after the first quarter and built a 42-3 halftime lead. Norwalk didn’t score until halfway through the second quarter when Crystal Lambey made the first of two free-throw attempts.
Keppel plays in the tournament final tonight at 8 p.m. as it takes on Crescenta Valley at John Glenn High School.

  ROSEMEAD – Rosemead High School Class of 2017 graduate Ivan Ip is known in the area for his basketball skills. So, many people were surprised when he recently announced his college selection. Ip choose Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island for its diving program. And, Rosemead High School doesn't have a pool on campus. Brown is a private university in the Ivy League and is the seventh oldest institution of higher learning in United States of America.

  Rosemead --  Pasadena Polytechnic High School won the Rosemead High School Girls Varsity Holiday Classic Tournament Championship by a score of 41-36 against host Rosemead on Dec. 3, 2016.

  Poly's Sarah Johnson scored 14 points to lead her team to the championship, while Kristal Espinoza led Rosemead in scoring with 18 points. Johnson was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament, while Poly's Alexis Pappachan, and Rosemead's Espinoza and teammate Amy Ung also were among those players named to the All Tournament team.

class="gkFeaturedItemTitle" PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Cantwell, Gabrielino, Mark Keppel and Rosemead lose in CIFSS Playoffs Second Round

  The four remaining local girls high school basketball teams all lost by various margins in California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section (CIFSS) Championship Playoff games on Feb. 18, 2017.

  Cantwell lost by the closest score, 50-42 to Esperanza in Division 1A, Mark Keppel lost 60-49 to St. Anthony in Division 1AA, Rosemead lost 44-33 to La Reina in Division 5AA, and Gabrielino lost 79-47 to Glendora in Division 3AA.

COVINA – The Keppel boys basketball team held off a fourth quarter rally and defeated Covina 51-41 at Northview High School in a consolation game of the Sierra Vista Tournament.
Freshman Laird Anderson led the way for the Aztecs (3-1) with 16 points. He was helped out by senior Nicholas Fong, who scored 12, and Michael Granados, who pitched in 11 points.
Fong, who as an upperclassman is taking a leadership role with the team, said while the Aztecs got the win there is still much to learn and improve upon.

  Cantwell Sacred Heart of Mary made a long trip to Temecula Valley High School and defeated the host team 85-66 in the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section Championship Playoff game on Feb. 17, 2017.  Cantwell will host Santa Monica on Feb. 21 at 7p.m.

  The Schurr and  Ocean View game score is not available. In other action San Gabriel Academy lost to visiting La Serna 68-61 in Division 3AA action, and host San Gabriel lost 71-69 to Segerstrom in a Division 4AA game at San Gabriel.

SOUTH EL MONTE – The Keppel girls basketball team went on a 16-0 second-quarter run and defeated South Pasadena 58-39 on Saturday night in the second round of the Sixth Annual South El Monte/Gary Houston Invitational at South El Monte High School. This comes after the Aztecs downed Garfield 57-27 on Friday night in the tournament’s opening round.

ALHAMBRA – Longtime Keppel boys basketball coach Hung Duong has many accolades to credit, winning several Almont League titles and going far in the CIF-Southern Section postseason a number of times during his 15-year career with the varsity squad. But Duong said he knows this season might be a tough one for the Aztecs.

  Ramona Convent of Alhambra defeated Hillcrest Christian of Thousand Oaks in California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section (CIFSS) girls varsity basketball Division 6 wild card game A at Ramona Convent on Feb. 14, 2017.

  Ramona Convent, which finished in third place in Horizon League, improved to 7-16 overall with the win, while Hillcrest Christian, which was fourth place finisher in Omega League, finished 10-6 overall.

ALHAMBRA – Not only is the Keppel girls basketball team experienced, it is also quite young with several players still being shy of their senior season. And second-year coach Jose Herrera thinks that will be a recipe for success for the Aztecs. After falling in the semifinals in both the CIF-Southern Section playoffs and the state tournament, Herrera is looking for big things from this year’s squad.
And with eight returners, big things are definitely a huge possibility for Keppel, Herrera said.

         Cantwell Sacred Heart of Mary, San Gabriel Academy, and Schurr advanced to the second round of the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section (CIFSS) boys varsity basketball playoffs with wins on Feb. 15, 2017.

  Cantwell won 64-56 in Division 1AA  at La Mirada and will play at Temecula Valley on Feb. 17.

Mark Keppel High girls basketball team easily defeated Garfield High School in the first round of the state division 3 playoff games Wednesday (3-9-16). Final score was Keppel 61 and Garfield 48.

Keppel dominated throughout the game with Sophia Song scoring 28 points. Next, Aztecs will advance to the second round and face Newbury Park High School on Saturday night.

  California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section on Feb. 12, 2017 announced girls varsity basketball playoff pairings for all divisions. All playoff games until finals are at 7 p.m. unless both schools and CIFSS grants approval of a different game time.This is the first year for parity in the divisions, with automatic qualifiers from each league and then teams must have a .500 overall record to be considered for an at-large entry in the playoffs. There are 57 first round byes total among the divisions due to lack of teams with a .500 overall record.

Two high schools serving Monterey Park will battle it out tonight (3/9/16) in the CIF State Division II  state girls basketball tournament. Mark Keppel serves most of Monterey Park, while Garfield High School draws students the southern tip of the city that is within the boundaries of the L.A. Unified School District and East Los Angeles..

  Mark Keppel and Gabrielino high school girls varsity basketball teams won league competition this week. Mark Keppel defeated Alhambra 58-15 and won against Schurr 74-36 to win the Almont League championship, while Gabrielino won 54-49 against El Monte and won 74-19 against Mountain View to win Mission Valley League championship.

  Rosemead continued its improvement with a second place finish in Mission Valley League with a 31-27 win against Arroyo and a 55-33 win against Mountain View, reaching the CIF Southern Section playoffs for the first time in four years.

  Mark Keppel and Rosemead high schools boys and girls varsity basketball teams won their respective league contests on Feb. 3, 2017.

  Mark Keppel boys defeated San Gabriel 62-54, while Keppel's girls won 69-38 against San Gabriel. Rosemead defeated South El Monte with the boys winning 53-52 and the Rosemead girls winning 47-18.
