Mark Keppel High School has hired Jose Herrera as its girls’ basketball new head coach, announced Mark Keppel High School Acting Principal John Scanlan. The Alhambra School Board approved Herrera at its meeting on Oct. 27, said Scanlan.
“We are excited to have him (Herrera) on board,” stated Scanlan enthusiastically. “He will keep the successful system we have and introduce some new things. He will fill out his staff within the next couple of weeks. We are considering starting a tournament here. We are familiar with his coaching through SGV Basketball Club.”
Previously, Keppel girls' basketball Head Coach Joseph Kikuchi resigned on Sept. 15, and later said it was because of personal health reasons. He was arrested on Sept. 24, accused of sexually abusing a girl high school student.
Herrera now heads a very successful program that made a CIF playoffs state-title run last season and has years of success in the Almont League and CIF playoffs, said Scanlan. Last season, Keppel was 10-0 in Almont League play and 26-8 overall and won the Southern California Regional Championship in the state playoffs before losing in the state championship game.
“Herrera took South El Monte High School girls varsity basketball team from 0-10 in Mission Valley League to 8-4 within two years,” said Scanlan.
