El Monte High School boys varsity basketball team rolled out to a 20-8 first quarter lead although Rosemead later came back to win a thrilling 65-59 Mission Valley League game at Rosemead on Jan. 27, 2016.
Edward Dominguez paced the El Monte Lions with nine points in the first quarter as they raced out to a 12-point lead, and then the visiting Lions extended the lead to 33-17 at halftime with Dominguez scoring eight more points and the team also got 10 points in the first half from Jordan Ayala.
Rosemead came out very spirited in the second half and outscored El Monte 23-14 in the third quarter, although El Monte still lead 47-40 after three quarters. Rosemead's Ivan Ip scored 13 points in the third quarter. Rosemead continued its comeback by outscoring El Monte 25-12 in the fourth quarter.
Steven Mach led the host Panthers with 13 second half points, especialy when El Monte double teamed Ip. Ip still responded with another 13 points in the fourth quarter with six of those points coming on six of six pressure-packed free throws made in the the last few minutes of the game to lead the host Panthers to victory. Teammate Nate Aguilar contributed some key rebounds on defense and teammate Brian Ly hit two important three pointers to help Rosemead take the lead late in the fourth quarter.
For El Monte, Dominguez finished with 26 points, and also contributing were Ivan Flores who had 12 points with 11 in the second half, and Devin Romero added nine points.
Rosemead is now 6-1 in league and 8-8 overall, while El Monte is 1-6 in league and 10-12 overall.
