EL MONTE - Matador quarterback Andy Guerrero threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to receiver Joey Villalobos with 48 seconds left in the game on a gutsy fourth and seven play as the San Gabriel High football team came back to defeat host Arroyo High, 40-38, Friday night in a CIF Southern Section quarterfinal game.
With the win, the Matadors move to the semis this Friday night against San Dimas, a team they lost to earlier in the season.
The win was also San Gabriel's seventh consecutive and moved the team as far as it has gone since 2003 when the team lost the title game to South Hills High.
Guerrero passed for 233 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for 140 yards and two more TDs.
Arroyo thought it had the game locked up with 1:24 left to play when quarterback Steven Rivera hit receiver Hunter Duran with a 56-yard TD score. But it proved to not be enough.
