MONTEBELLO - Schurr High used the legs of running backs Eric Perez and Abel Troncosa to sprint into the CIF Southern Section playoffs.
On 26 carries, Perez had 200 yards and two touchdowns, while teammate Troncosa also scored two touchdowns along with 164 yards on 15 carries as the Spartans beat visiting intercity rival Montebello High, 28-7, Friday night in an Almont League game.
Schurr and Montebello finished the season tied for second behind Bell Gardens High and are both playoff bound. With the win, Schurr improved to 4-6 overall and 3-2 in Almont League play, while the Oilers fell to 6-4 overall and 3-2 in league play.
Schurr coach Marco Rodriguez praised his players after the win.
"Our kids are improving," Rodriguez said. "They're getting better. They're growing. We've been running the ball better lately. The last four weeks we've been doing better."
Perez scored from 36 and four yards out late in the first quarter and midway through the third quarter, respectively.
Troncosa scored in the second quarter on a 13-yard touchdown run and sealed the victory for the Spartans with a late-game four-yard scoring scamper.
