Schurr and San Gabriel high schools are off to 2-0 starts in Almont League football play.
The Spartans (5-1-1 overall) defeated Keppel, 28-7, last Friday and and travels across town Friday night to play arch-rival Montebello (2-5, 0-2).
Nick Castillo rushed for 184 yards on 21 carries to help Schurr to 305 rushing yards. Eric Magos added 82 yards on eight attempts.
Aaron Cantu completed six of 10 passes for 158 yards and three touchdowns. Mark Contreras (10 yards), Carlos Arredondo (45 yards) and Angel Sanchez (20 yards) caught the TD passes.
San Gabriel (4-3) scored a wild 49-28 victory at Bell Gardens last Friday. It’s the Matadors third consecutive win against B.G.
Quarterback Isaac Valdez passed for more than 400 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead San Gabriel.
The Matadors, who defeated Keppel in their league opener, play arch-rival Alhambra (4-2) at 7 Friday night at home.
Alhambra defeated Montebello, 32-27, last Friday on quarterback Darrian Cazarin’s 3-yard touchdown run with 36 seconds remaining. The scored capped a 61-yard scoring drive.
Cornerback Jonathan Crockom intercepted a pass to seal the win for the visiting Moors.
Cazarin had a big night passing for 338 yards and three touchdowns. Brandon Wilson scored on a 4-yard touchdown run and caught a 27-yard TD pass to help lead the Moors. Crockom caught TD passes of 32 and 16 yards.
In the Mission Valley League, Rosemead overwhelmed Mountain View, 41-7, to even its record to 1-1. The Panthers (2-5 overall) were led by Matt Fregoso, who scored four touchdowns on runs of 15, 3, 14 and 7 yards.
Quarterback Hilario Contreras threw two TD passes. He connected with Luis Diaz on a 40-yard strike and with Conrado Simpson on a 14-yard score.
Rosemead travels to play at South El Monte (2-5, 2-0) Friday night.
