Schurr Does 'OK' At Scrimmage

  • By Shel Segal
LA CANADA - 9/3/10 - Going into its scrimmage Friday night on the road against La Canada High, Schurr High football coach Ben Negrete had some very clear cut things he wanted to find out.

"We got a couple of young guys starting, so we want to see them in action," Negrete said. "Best case scenario is they step up and play with the level we're comfortable with and I'm anxious to see how our new kicker (Gustavo Tlatenshi) and punter (Ricky Fonseca) do."

Negrete was also pleased that the team is ranked fourth in the Mid Valley Division in CIF Southern Section preseason polls.

"Modestly, it doesn't mean much, but it's nice to see and it means we've been working hard and established a bit of an identity," Negrete said.

And what did he think of the team's efforts in the scrimmage?

"It was an OK performance," he said. "It wasn't what I wanted. I would give us an average grade on this one. I was looking for a B, B+ and I'd give us a C, C-. We have to eliminate turnovers, lower the amount of mental mistakes and do better tackling. We do those things and we'll be OK."
