Keppel Keeps Own Scoreless Streak Alive

  • By Parimal M. Rohit
SAN GABRIEL - 9-17-2010 - The Mark Keppel High football team thought it ended its scoreless season on the first play of the game against host Gabrielino High, but a costly penalty kept its scoreless streak alive as the Aztecs suffered a 43-0 road loss to the Eagles in a CIF nonleague matchup at San Gabriel High on Friday night.

Aztec receiver Matt Chidez returned the opening kickoff 70 yards to the end zone for what would have been Keppel's first points of the 2010 season, only to have a clipping penalty negate the play and prevent the points from being kept on the scoreboard.

The Aztecs (0-3) never recovered, allowing the Eagles (2-1) to take a 24-0 lead into halftime.

Gabrielino was led by Eddie Moreno, who amassed 185 rushing yards and ran for two touchdowns, including a 75-yard punt return late in the first quarter. Eagles quarterback Isaac Garcia added two touchdowns through the air.

In its first three games of the season, the Aztecs have been outscored 111-0. Friday's loss is its ninth consecutive dating back to last season, when the Aztecs ended a 40-game losing streak with a 36-0 victory over Mountain View High on Oct. 2, 2009.

Keppel returns home this week to host Baldwin Park's Sierra Vista Dons, who are undefeated. Almont League action begins on Oct. 15 with the Aztecs hosting Alhambra High at Aztec Field.
