Schurr Loses But Is Improving

  • By Shel Segal
MONTEBELLO - 9/17/10 - Despite losing, 29-26, to visiting Downey High Friday night in a CIF nonleague game, Schurr High football coach Ben Negrete said he believes his team has made improvements.

"We made a step forward," Negrete said. "We played a much better team. We just need to stop giving up so many big plays in the passing defense."

After having Cantwell Sacred Heart run all over the defense a week ago, Negrete said the Spartans (0-2) played a much better game this time around.

"We did a good job in stopping the run," he said. "That was our primary goal all week and we stepped up and did that."

In addition, Negrete said he was pleased with the team's offensive performance against Downey (2-0).

"The offense played well," he said. "The running attack was very solid."

Negrete added he is very happy with the way senior quarterback Aaron Cantu is leading the team's efforts.

"Our passing attack is still coming together," Negrete said. "Aaron is doing pretty well under the circumstances. He's holding up his end and the receivers are getting better. He's actually better than he was last year. His supporting cast is just a little inexperienced."

And what does Schurr need to do next Friday at El Toro High to get into the win column?

"I think we just need to give up big plays on defense," Negrete said. "We're getting better on that. If we can do that, we'll be fine."
