With the win, Schurr (4-0 in league) wrapped up the Almont League title.
"We had the ballgame won with 51 seconds left," Schurr coach Ben Negrete said. "All we had to do was run out the clock and we fumbled."
In fact, Schurr was fumbling all night despite dominating the Oiler defense.
"We actually controlled the game from the beginning to end, but we turned the ball over five times and three times in the red zone," Negrete said. "That made it difficult on ourselves."
With Montebello recovering the ball on the Spartan 38-yard line, the Oilers moved down field and scored a touchdown on a one-yard quarterback keeper with about 30 seconds to play.
Montebello then tried on onside kick, which was unsuccessful, giving Schurr the ball around midfield.
"We then hit a hook-and-ladder pass from Cantu to Castro to Abraham Gonzalez," Negrete said. "He took it down to about the 15-yard line. Cantu took a six-yard loss on a sack. Then, he threw a pass to Castro that was incomplete.
"Then we came back with the same pass pattern and Castro caught it for the touchdown with five seconds left on the clock."
Schurr will face visiting San Gabriel High next Friday with a mission.
"We're hoping we can go undefeated in league, get a good seeding and get a first round home game in postseason," Negrete said.
