Schurr Hoping For Almont League Title

  • By Shel Segal
MONTEBELLO - 11/19/10 - After losing in the first round of the CIF Southern Section playoffs last year, Schurr High boys' soccer coach Tomas Haynes is looking for a bit more from his squad this season.

"I'd like to get past the first round of the CIF playoffs," said Haynes, whose Spartans finished second in Almont League a season ago behind Bell Gardens. "We want to win league, keep the kids focused, keep them working hard. It's just like practice. Work hard in practice. Work hard in the game and have fun."

In his 12th year as coach, Haynes said he feels he has assembled a solid team.

"I think we'll be pretty good," Haynes said. "We have a lot of returning starters. Just like everything else, we just got to stay injury free."

Holding down the team up front will be junior center midfielder Miguel Mendoza and senior forward Mario Rubacalva, Haynes said.

"They'll hopefully score some goals and lead the team," Haynes said of Mendoza and Rubacalva. "They'll set the example, the way they play, the way they act and most important to me is attitude."

Leading the team on defense are defenders junior Tomas Rodrigues and senior Salvador Cervantes, Haynes said.

"They'll anchor the defense for us," Haynes said of Rodrigues and Cervantes. "They have good leadership. They're good returning starters. They have experience."

Haynes added in goal will be junior Edward Maya.

"Last year was (Maya's) first year, so he's coming back and should be good for us and help our defense a lot," Haynes said.

In order to win that league championship, Haynes said Schurr will have to play rivals Montebello and Bell Gardens tough.

"We have to finish our goals and can't make any mistakes," he said. "Just play with confidence."
