PREP SPORTS: Keppel Softball Team Walloped!

ALHAMBRA – The Keppel softball team fell behind early and never got the bats going against visiting Covina, losing 15-0 in five innings on Monday in a nonleague game.
Pitcher Fiona Zemon took the loss for Keppel (3-6), giving up 12 runs on eight hits, walking one and striking out three in 3 1/3 innings of work.
Covina scored twice in the top of the first inning on a single, three errors and a wild pitch. The Colts added three more runs in the third inning on a single, double, triple and ground out before striking for 10 runs in the fourth inning.

Taylor Alcala got the win for Covina (4-3) in her first start of the year, going the distance and allowing just two hits, third-inning singles to second baseman Summer French and third baseman Christina Madrid.
Keppel assistant coach John Young said was not at all happy with the Aztecs’ performance.
“There’s a lot of work to do,” he said. “A lot, a lot of work to do. It was just a poor effort today all around. Today was ugly, extra ugly.”
He added the one thing the Aztecs could take away from the loss is the fact they didn’t give up.
“They didn’t quit,” Young said. “They kept fighting. That’s all I ask. All I ask for them is to give me effort. And that was lagging in the second through the fourth innings. Once we get everyone back in their spots I think we’ll be a little bit better.”
