Spartans Feel Ready For Tough Week

MONTEBELLO - 9/27/10 - The Schurr High girls' volleyball team is hoping it has turned a page for the better as it takes on Whittier High at home this Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.

After losing the season opener to South Pasadena, the Spartans went 2-1 in a recent tournament - including a 2-1 defeat of Pomona Catholic - before defeating Rio Hondo Prep, 25-22, in a one-set playoff match, much to the delight of first-year coach Tony Ugalde.

Ugalde said the Spartans held their own against a tough South Pasadena squad before entering the tournament.

"(South Pasadena) had three kids over 6 feet," Ugalde said. "They're tough. But we're feeling good. The kids felt really good emotionally off the matches."

This will be a tough week for the Spartans, Ugalde said, as they have three other matches in addition to Tuesday's: Wednesday at Mountain View High, hosting Pioneer High on Thursday and a trip to Catalina Island on Friday to play Avalon High.

Ugalde said he is pretty optimistic about the girls' play.

"They're feeling pretty up," he said. "They feel better than last, so we're feeling good."
