Rosemead Places 5th In West Coast Classic

Wrestling2ROSEMEAD - 12/18/10 - The Rosemead High wrestling team finished fifth overall in the annual Louie Madrigal West Coast Classic Wrestling Tournament at Rosemead High this past Friday and Saturday.

The overall winner of the tournament was La Sierra High.

Rosemead coach Alex Rai was very pleased with his team's performance.

"We exceeded expectations," Rai said. "Guys wrestled their tails off and guys finished in placing when they weren't supposed to be there."

One Panther who did exceptionally well, Rai said, was junior and team captain Ryan Maldonado, who wrestled in the 130 category.

"(Maldonado) defeated the number one seed in the quarterfinals," Rai said. "He made the championship finals where he lost in the last 10 seconds.

"I'm very proud of him. He's the hardest working kid on the team. That's why he's the captain. I expect him to place in the majority of tournaments we go to and I expect him to be an all-CIF placer."

Another wrestler who did well, Rai said, was senior Matt Fregoso.

"Matt made it to the championship finals," Rai said. "He went the deepest in the tournament. He was the number one seed. He wrestled the number two seed in the tournament. They were both state-ranked guys. He did real well. The difference is the other kid is 135 pounds and Matt will drop to 125 pounds by the end of the season. He's still in football shape."

Fregoso said he thought he wrestled pretty well in the tournament.

"I felt good until I got to the finals," Fregoso said. "The other guy was really good."

Fregoso added he thought the team did well as a whole.

"I think we did really well," he said. "It was the first time we placed in the top five in that tournament in several years. A lot of guys stepped up. We had three guys in the finals and they wrestled really well."

And how did hosting the tournament go overall?

"We got a lot of compliments from a lot of coaches," Rai said. "We're going to keep doing it."
